Information
Patient
Appointments with Dr Ranganath are designed to be calm, informative and unhurried. You’ll have time to discuss your symptoms, treatment options and any concerns you may have. Bringing your current glasses prescription, a list of medications and details of previous eye treatments will help ensure a thorough assessment.
What happens during an eye examination? Your visit will include a review of your medical history, vision tests and a detailed examination of your eyes using specialist equipment. Additional scans/photographs may be taken to assess the retina.
Do eye drops affect my vision after the appointment? Yes – dilating drops can cause temporary blurred vision and light sensitivity for a few hours. It’s best to avoid driving until your vision clears.
What are intravitreal injections? These are precise, painless injections of medication into the eye to treat retinal conditions such as macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy. The procedure is quick and performed under local anaesthetic.
How do I know if I need cataract surgery? Cataract surgery is recommended when clouding of the lens affects your vision or daily activities. Dr Ranganath will assess your eyes and explain the benefits, risks and recovery process in detail. Is treatment painful? Most procedures are carried out with local anaesthetic, and patients generally experience little or no discomfort. Dr Ranganath and her team will ensure you are at ease throughout.
How long will my appointment take? Most appointments last between 30 and 45 minutes, though this can vary depending on the tests and scans required. Dr Ranganath ensures every consultation allows enough time to discuss your results and any next steps without feeling rushed.
Can I bring someone with me? Yes, you’re welcome to bring a friend or family member for support. Many patients find it helpful to have someone with them, especially if dilating eye drops are used or if you’d like another person to hear the information discussed.
Do I need a referral to see Dr Ranganath?
If you’re an NHS patient, a referral from your GP or optometrist is usually required. Private patients can self-refer or be referred by their optician. Dr Ranganath is happy to advise on the best route for your specific situation.
Can I drive after my appointment? If dilating drops are used, your vision may be blurred and sensitive to light for several hours. It’s best to arrange alternative transport home. If no drops are required, you should be able to drive as normal.
Before Your Appointment: To help make the most of your visit, please arrive a few minutes early to complete any forms or vision checks. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them with you, along with a list of your current medications and any previous eye test results. If your pupils are dilated during the appointment, you may wish to bring sunglasses for comfort afterwards.
After Your Appointment: You’ll receive clear guidance on any recommended treatments or follow-up care. If you’ve had eye drops, your vision may remain blurred for several hours, so it’s safest to avoid driving until your sight returns to normal. Written information will be provided where appropriate, and Dr Ranganath encourages you to get in touch if you have any questions once you’re home.
Treatment & Follow-Up: Dr Ranganath provides individualised care plans for every patient. Depending on your condition, you may be invited for follow-up scans or treatments such as intravitreal injections or laser therapy. These appointments are scheduled to ensure consistent monitoring and the best possible outcomes for your vision.
Patient Comfort & Support: Appointments are designed to be calm and unhurried. The team understands that eye procedures can feel daunting, so everything is explained clearly and at your pace. Most treatments are quick and painless, and every effort is made to help you feel comfortable and reassured throughout.
Accessibility & Parking: If you have mobility needs or require assistance getting to the clinic, please let the team know when booking. Accessible parking and facilities are available, and staff are happy to offer extra support where needed.
What if I have more questions? You are encouraged to ask as many questions as you need. Clear communication and reassurance are central to Dr Ranganath’s approach.
What are the signs I should seek urgent eye care? If you experience sudden vision loss, flashing lights, a dark curtain across your vision, or severe eye pain, seek urgent medical attention. These symptoms can indicate a serious eye condition that needs immediate treatment.
